Soil formation is a slow, stepwise process and it takes thousands of years to form a layer of soil just a few centimetres thick.

Soil is formed by weathering of rocks. Weathering is the break down of rocks by the action of air wind and water. Soil formation is a slow process. It occurs all time.

Soil formation is a two steps process:

• Weathering of rocks takes place. Rock is broken down in small particles.

•These small particles mix with humus (organic matter) and form soil.
