The Gonds were one of the most important tribe during the medieval period found in large numbers across the present days states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. The region occupied by them came to be known as Gondwana. The Gond people practiced shifting cultivation. The large Gond tribe was divided into many smaller clans and every clan had its own Raja or rai. The Akbarnama gives an account of the Gond system that comprised 70,000 villages.
