Administrative system of Chandragupta
Explanation:
- Chandragupta was not only the greatest emperor of ancient India but also a very good administrator. Kautilya's book Arthashastra gives a vivid description about the administration of his time.
- The entire empire was divided into five provinces- Magadh, Taxila,Swarnagiri, Tosali and Kaushambi for the efficient administration. The provinces was again sub-divided into districts or Janapadas. Janapadas divided into Ganas or Sthanas andSthana into villages.
- The Sthanas and Gopas was in charge of Janapada. Gopa was the head of 5 to 10 villages. Samaharta. The villages are the lowest part of administration. was The village headman was Gramik.
- The king is the head of the state .He was assisted by his Council of Ministers or Mantri Parishada. There were about 26 departments and each is headed by a mantri. the king was also the head of Judicial administration. There were many courts established in each provinces and each vollages. In the villages the village headman settle the disputes.
- The state collected tax in both cash and in grains . A revenue officer was appointed to collected taxes.
