Throughout the early modern period, the English and the French were the two most influential power in Europe. Their commercial and martial concerns clashed with each other and therefore a struggle emerged between the two. Over a course of time, they both wanted to establish their control over the Indian market. Consequently, intense competition arose. They became arch-rivals in commerce and this dispute finally led to wars.

Anglo-French rivalry:

The Anglo-French rivalry was a conflict between the French and Great Britain. The war continued for almost 20 years from 1744 to 1763. After the death of Aurangzeb and Nizam-ul-Mulk, there prevails a vacant condition in terms of central power.

Several local or regional rulers engaged in fighting with each other for the acquisition of power. This gave the way to the foreign powers British and the French to stand and fight being partnered with regional rulers. Eventually, the objective of both the parties behind the rivalry was to establish a monopoly over the trade and commerce of the southern region.
