Discuss the anomalous behaviour of lithium and beryllium and there diagonal relationship between magnesium and aluminium respectively
Answers
Answer:
Anomalous behaviour of Lithiuim is due to its exceptionally small size of its atom and ion, and (ii) high polarising power. As a result, there is increased covalent character of lithium compounds which is responsible for their solubility in organic solvents.
Same is with the case of Beryllium, it is small in size ionic and atomic size, it has high ionisation enthalpy and it shows coordination number of 4 not more than it.
Both shows diagonal relationship between magnesium and aluminium respectively because they have same sizes.
Explanation:-
Similarities between Lithium and Magnesium:-
1. Both have same size.
2. Both are harder and lighter than the other group elements.
3. Both react slowly with water.
4. Both carbonates decomposes easily on heating.
Similarities between Beryllium and Aluminium:-
1. Both have oxide film and cannot be attacked by acids.
2. Hydroxide of both forms beryllate ion and aluminate ion.
