Answer:

Mattancherry Synagogue

Architecture of the Mattancherry Synagogue

Once destroyed during incessant Portuguese shelling, the Mattancherry Synagogue is among the most historically relevant locations in Fort Kochi. The oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth, it was built in 1568.  The Synagogue is situated in a place called Jew town and the streets there are lined up with antique shops which is frequented by foreigners and antique hunters. One can also see the beautiful houses built in European styles.

The complex has four buildings. It was built adjacent to the Mattancherry Palace temple on the land given to the Malabari Yehuden or " Yehuden Mappila" community by the Raja of Kochi, Rama Varma. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the Mattancherry synagogue share a common wall. The area around the synagogue is a centre of spice trade and curio shops. The Place that displays a blend of colonial and Kerala style of architecture is in the shape of a quadrangular building constructed in the traditional Nalukettu style of Kerala architecture.

People flock to Jew Street to catch a glimpse of this architecture and the lineage of the Jews who still follow the old customs.

The Architectural Features:

• The Mattancherry is a 2-storey quadrangular palace built in a traditional Kerala style.

• There are four separate wings which open into the central courtyard which houses the temple of royal deity Pazhayannur Bhagavathi. There are also temples of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva on the two sides of the palace.

• The design of arches and chambers truly exhibits the European style of architecture.

• The ceilings are well designed by wood carved floral designs including the design of an inverted lotus.

• The flooring which imitates the use of black marble, is made by using burnt coconut shells, lime, plant juices and egg whites.
