Networks are an interconnected system of autonomous systems or workstations which perform different functions but operate as a single unit. The types of networks are broadly classified into calendar-scheduled and time-based networks.

Calendar-scheduled networks operate with a set of instructions for a particular period of the calendar. They can only function when there are two or more days involved in the networking period.

Time-based networks operate within a fixed time frame consisting of a few hours. The maximum it can operate is for 24 hours, after which, it comes under calendar-scheduled networks.

  • In project management, calendar scheduling is a list of a project's tasks, and deliverables, normally with planned 'start and finish dates'.
  • A calendar schedule is generally used in the planning of project management.

Time-based networks :

  • A 'time-sequenced network diagram' is used to track what needs to be done every day and how these tasks will affect other activities in the project.
  • 'Time-sequenced network diagram' improves the strength to bring the 'project in on time and on budget'.
