The problems and the threats that the world is facing have reached a new level of complexity. How do we defeat ISIS? How do we protect ourselves from terrorism? How can we prevent mass shootings and gun violence? Feelings of fear and uncertainty are spreading rapidly.

We can’t solve any problem unless we really understand what caused it. Unfortunately, the political discussion that we hear today seems to dance around the real issues. As a society, we seem unwilling to ask ourselves tough questions.

Whenever a threat arises, the easy thing to do is find someone to blame and try to convince opponents of their errors. This is a sign of emotional immaturity. Emotional intelligence means to understand the reasons for your feelings.

If you suddenly find yourself feeling defensive, angry, jealous, or fearful, then it’s helpful to take a step back and look beyond the immediate trigger. Maybe it was a small thing. Perhaps someone said something that rubbed you the wrong way. Undoubtedly, the emotional response happened because this incident tapped into some other, deeper vulnerability. Reacting to the immediate issue won’t solve the underlying problem.

When sudden negative feelings erupt, it means a problem has gone unresolved for a long time. Incidents don’t happen randomly. These are signs of a deep unmet need. Often it is something too painful for the conscious mind to deal with.

We’ve reached a point in our society in which we can no longer afford to avoid the real issues. We can’t waste our time on trivial arguments that accomplish nothing. We need to stop trying to be right and start trying to understand the truth. We need to cultivate the ability to productively talk with one another about important topics.

In the media and online there is constant chatter and noise. But still we’re not getting anywhere. I’m reminded of the Simon & Garfunkel song “The Sound of Silence:”

And in the naked light I saw, ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening
