Gravity is one major force that creates tides. In 1687, Sir Isaac Newton explained that ocean tides result from the gravitational attraction of the sun and moon on the oceans of the earth (Sumich, J.L., 1996).

Tides are the alternate rise and fall of the surface ocean water in about 24 hours . It is a regular rhythmic motion, resulting from the gravitational attraction exerted upon the Earth by the sun and the Moon.

Causes of formation of tides

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and to some extent by the pull of the Sun, which is very far from the Earth.

♦The moon, through small, is very near the Earth and exerts a strong gravitational pull on the Earth. As the Moon rises later each day by about 50 minutes than the day before, high tide occurs later each day.

♦Naturally, the water of the Earth nearest to the Moon will be pulled by the Moon's gravitational force.

♦The moon is directly overhead with the result that the water piles up causing an ordinary high tide there.
