After the downfall of the Mughal empire, the Sikhs, taking advantage of the confused situation, carved out independent states of their own in Punjab. It was Ranjit Singh who united these states into a powerful kingdom in the Punjab during the nineteenth century. He established military rule in Punjab. After Ranjit Singh's death, the military set-up exploded and slowly the real power passed into the hands of the Khalsa army
The causes of the First Anglo-Sikh War.:
1. The death of Ranjit Singh created the great chaos/ tension among the Sikhs communities and due to which they collide with each other.
2. The Sikhs built up a strong army against the British and Afghan aggressions.
3. British attacked on the united forces of Punjab but they faced them with all bravery. Along with them Hindu, Muslim and Sikh communities faced huge British army strongly.
4. Prime Minister Lal Singh and Commander Tej Singh betrayed their own armies and people and due to this the Punjab army was defeated.
5. Treaty of Lahore: After the defeat from British armies, the Punjab armies were forced to sign on the Treaty of Lahore.
