The caste system consisted of four varnas or castes- brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas and shudras. Before the caste system was established, people could choose their occupation.
But after it had been established, the people were not allowed to change jobs. Thus, birth stood in the way of a person's job. Many social reformers opposed the caste system. Many like Jyothirao Phule convinced the low caste people that there was no scienctific basis for the beliefs and castes and before eyes of God, everybody are equal.
Despite the work of the social reformers, some believed that only brahmins can be priests and only kshatriyas can be warriors. They also believed that only selected people are allowed to enter temples and other religious places.
Gandhiji also played his part in the Caste System. He called the people of lower caste hairjans, or people of God. He encouraged the lower people to fight for their rights and be successful. In his Sabarmati Ashram, all the people are treated equally.
During the coming of the British, the British openly criticized some customs like the caste system. It was finally abolished.
