Answer:

Qasim later fell out with the British and fought them at the Battle of Buxar. He opposed the British East India Company's position that their imperial Mughal licence (dastak) meant that they could trade without paying taxes (other local merchants with dastaks were required to pay up to 40% of their revenue as tax).

The Battle of Buxar was fought on 22 October 1764, between the forces under the command of the British East India Company, led by Hector Munro, and the combined armies of Mir Qasim, the Nawab of Bengal till 1763.

Discuss the clash between Mir Qasim and the East India Company

Mir Qasim, who had been the Nawab of Bengal from 1760 to 1764, had a dispute with the British East India Company.

Mir Qasim was appointed Nawab by the East India Company. Mir Qasim was the son-in-law of Mir Jafar, who was removed by the British East India Company and made Mir Qasim the Nawab of Bengal. Mir Qasim had betrayed his father-in-law Mir Jafar and together with the British captured the power of Bengal. In a way, he was a puppet in the hands of the British. The British had put him on the throne of Bengal for their own interests.

Gradually Mir Qasim started increasing his influence, Mir Qasim opposed many policies implemented by the British. This was considered interference by the British in his personal affairs because he considered Mir Kasim as his servant. Indian merchants had suffered greatly because of the illegal privilege of exemption from fees received by the company and its employees. Mir Qasim urged the British to compromise on this agreement but the East India Company did not listen to him.

Apart from this, Mir Qasim was trying to modernise his army which went unpunished by the British. He made the duties on all goods of trade equal for both Indian merchants and British merchants.

This action of his was exasperated by the British and in 1763 he started the war against Mir Qasim.
