1. The election commission of India is an independent body that came into function through a constitutional amendment.  
2. The commission is responsible for the hassle-free election process at the Central as well as the state level. It is a permanent body.  
3. According to article 324 of the Indian Constitution, the election commission shall have a chief election commissioner and two other election commissioners.  
4. These are appointed by the President of India and have a salary equal to that of judges of the Supreme Court.
5. The tenure of the election commissioners is six years or until the age of 65 whichever is earlier.

• The Election Commission comprises of the Chief Election Commissioner and such other  Election Commissioners as might be chosen by the President from time to time.
• Since the time the first Chief Election Commissioner was designated in 1950, there was no other Election Commissioner till 1989.
• The Chief Election Commissioner was served by a larger number  of officials.
• The Election Commission turned into a multi-member body on 16 October 1989 when the President delegated two more Election Commissioners.
• The senior of the two Election Commissioners is delegated as the Chief Election Commissioner.
