Conditions necessary for combustion:

  • Presence of combustible substance
  • Presence of supporter of combustion
  • Heating the combustible substance to its ignition temperature

  • Presence of a combustible substance i.e. a substance that can burn is a pre-requisite for combustion. It is the substrate for the fire.
  • Presence of a supporter of combustion is important to initiate and keep the process going. This supporter is oxygen which is present abundantly in the air around us.
  • Ignition temperature is the minimum temperature at which the substance or substrate catches fire an starts burning. We have to heat the substance up to this temperature for it to start burning i.e. for combustion to start.
