Fibre optics are useful for transmitting communication signals over hair thin strands of glass(sometimes plastic). It is used because it is cheap ,for long distance communications. It is reliable.
Construction:
The central part of the fibre is called CORE and refractive index is about 1.7.
The fibre is coated with a thin layer of CLADDING of relatively lower refractive index(like 1.5 or so)
Working:
The core of the fibre is optically denser than the outer layer(cladding),the fibre is so thin that it can be easily bent without breaking.
when a light is incident at one end at a small angle it refracts at an angle which is grater than the critical angle.hence it suffers total internal refraction. This process repeats again until light comes out of the other end, its as if the fibre acts as a pipe for light , also absorption of light is negligible so emergent light is of the same intensity as the incident light.
