The Pallavas made immense contribution in the fields of art, architecture and fine arts. In fact, they were considered to be pioneers in this field. The Open Art Gallery in Mamallapuram is a standing example of their masterpieces in art. As for architecture, the rock cut temples are unique to this period. These temples were cut out of rock and no other materials were used to construct these temples. The Pancha Rathas and the Shore Temple in Mamallapuram, as well as the Kailasanathar Temple in Kanchi are some examples of Pallavan architecture.

Fine art was also given due importance. The music inscriptions Thirumayam and Kudumianmalai indicate the Pallavas’ love for music. Mridangam, Yaazhi and Murasu were popular musical instruments in use. The emperors Narasimhavarman I and Mahendravarman I excelled in music. Temple sculptures indicate that dance was popular during this time. Drama and paintings were also given due importance.
