To me, they are ‘separation of power between different branches of government’, ‘rule of law equal to all’ and ‘respect for those who differ in opinion’. Firstly, democracy, when it works well, strives to balance the levers of power so that one person or branch of government remains accountable to others. This makes sure no power remains unchecked and that personal vendetta doesn’t trump greater good of the people. It also tries to maintain equal application of law regardless of a citizen’s economic or social standing. This is important for economic development since it encourages meritocracy. Furthermore, democracy is itself an exercise in civil argument and constructive debate. It teaches people to respect dissent and encourage dialogue.

Core democratic values are the fundamental beliefs and Constitutional principles of American society, which unite all Americans. These values are expressed in the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and other significant documents, speeches and writings of the nation
