Demographic transition (DT) is the transition from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates as a country or region develops from a pre-industrial to an industrialized economic system. The theory was proposed in 1929 by the American demographer Warren Thompson,[1] who observed changes, or transitions, in birth and death rates in industrialized societies over the previous 200 years. Most developed countrieshave completed the demographic transition and have low birth rates; most developing countries are in the process of this transition.[2][3] The major (relative) exceptions are some poor countries, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa and some Middle Easterncountries, which are poor or affected by government policy or civil strife, notably, Pakistan, Palestinian territories, Yemen, and Afghanistan.[2]

The demographic transition theory:

  • It is a generalized description of the changing pattern of mortality, fertility and growth rates as societies move from one demographic regime to another. Initially, this country has been on the first stage with maximum birth and death percentage.
  • This very process of transition took birth in our land in the early 1920s. India is quick approaching its third stage completion involving a low death rate with a rapidly declining birth rate. Though the death rate fluctuates keeping the population size stationary.
  • The second stage prevails by the onset in decline of death rate, however, the birth rate responded only in the second half, marking the stage end with its decline.

Yes, it is an important tool for a population study.
