“The Diary of a Young Girl” is a book which has been written by a Dutch girl who has been hiding for four years with her family. She had written about the two years of her life in the Netherlands during their escape from the Nazi execution. It was during that time that the Franks were forced into hiding after the Germans invaded the Netherlands. In The Diary of Anne Frank, the characters feel sadness after reading the hopeful message written on the cake. The message was “Peace 1944.” After reading the message everyone felt sad and worried about the life they are living. Miep gets reminded by Mrs. Van Daan about last year’s cake which read “Peace in 1943.” This suggests the crave desire of the people about to live in peace and harmony in their land. The people had expected peace in the year 1943 which they left deprived of. Hence, they feel terrified about the coming 1944.
