After the death of 10th Guru, many evil practices and corruption crept into the Sikhism. So there began the need to reform the same. One of the earliest reforms include Nirankari movement. This movement was started by Baba Dyal in 1851. The movement was against the useless rites, rituals and image worship.
The next reform movement was Namdhari or Kuka movement. the movement focused on living a pious and simple life. It believed in spiritual tradition of the community and preached original teachings of Guru Nanak.
Another early Sikh reform movement was Singh Sabha Movement which was started with the aim of having a separate identity for Sikhism from Hinduism. It was also started in reaction to the proselytising activities of Christians, Muslim Aligarh movement and Ahmadiyah Movement.
