The first movement which was an initial offshoot of Sikhism was called The Nirankari Movement. It was founded by Baba Dayal in the 1840s.
His
reform brought a rejection of idolatry and Brahman rituals and he emphasized upon
the worship of a formless God, Nirankar.
It also involved a lot of preaching and ban on liquor, lying, cheating and correct the communities’ morals. The Ninkaris had various worship centres with their own priests and it became a permanent sect in Sikhism.
Another movement which was a result of the Kuka movement of Punjab was the Namdhari Movement. It was founded by Balak Singh and hus followers took him as a re-birth of Guru Govind Singh.
To rectify the unrest due to previous activities such as Christian converts that shook foundation of sikh religion, Thakur Singh founded the Singh Sabha of Amritsar in 1873.
The reform focused on restoring the true Sikhism teaching by publishing historical religious books and educating the new converts through this educational movement.
The Sikh Gurdwaras before 1920 were administered by the Udasi Sikh mahants, who took the gurdwara aids and other income as their personal income.
The British Government supported these mahants as a counterbalance to the uprising of nationalism amongst the Sikhs.
The Gurdwara Reform Movement stirred an agitation among people to free the gurdwaras from the corrupt mahants and for handing over the gurdwaras to Sikh representatives.
An elected committee known as the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, took control of gurdwaras in November 1920. The movement for the freedom of the gurdwaras transformed into the Akali movement.
This later got divided into three channels namely pro-government loyalists, moderate nationalist reformers, and the political structure of Sikh communalism.
