The most famous one was the Indian Forest Act of 1878. Both the 1878 act and the 1927 act sought to consolidate and reserve the areas having forest cover, or significant wildlife, to regulate movement and transit of forest produce, and duty leviable on timber and other forest produce.

The best forests were called 'reserved forests'. Effects of the amendment of Forest Act on the lives of the villagers :

(i) The Forest Acts created many problems for the villagers.

(ii) People were forced to steal wood from the forests and if caught, were at the mercy of the forest guards.

Many forests which supplied valuable timber were declared as reserved forests by the British. The tribals were not allowed to collect wood, fruits, hunt and practice shifting cultivation in these forests. This resulted in the loss of livelihood, poverty and hunger among the tribals.
