Litmus is water soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens .The main use of litmus paper is to test whether the given solution is acidic, basic or salt.

In acids in their aqueous form, blue litmus paper turns red, while red litmus paper remains red in acidic solutions.

In base in their aqueous form, red litmus paper turns blue ,while blue litmus paper remains unchanged in basic solutions.

When neutral substances like sugar and salt are tested with litmus paper, then the litmus does not show any of the change as like acid or base and thus we can recognize them as neutral substances.

Hope it helps u!!!
