On May5 Louis XVI called together an assembly of the estates general to pass proposals for new taxes. The 1st and 2nd estate sent300 representatives who were seated while the 3rd estate sent 600 representatives standing back. Peasants, artisans and women were denied entry. The 3rd estate demanded that voting now be conducted by by the assembly as a whole where each member had 1 vote. On 20 june they assembled in the indoor tennis court in the grounds of Versailles and discussed further.
