The green colour of a leaf is due to presence of chlorophyll . Although all leafs are green, some have white or yellow patches like spot on them , for example ,the leaf of Coleus. Such leaves are called variegated leaves. Only the green part of leaf shows production of starch . Carry out a starch test on a variegated leaf of a plant that has been kept in sunlight .Only those parts of the leaf will turn blue - black which were green , while the white or yellow patches remain unchanged . This shows that photosynthesis occurs only in chlorophyll - containing leaves.
