The extent to which religious beliefs shaped the events of 1857 were as follows :
- Christian clergy were luring Indians into Christianity. Due to this the Indians turned against the British.
- William Bentick made many social reforms. He banned sati and child marriage. Hindus considered this thing against their religion.
- Discontent has spread among Indians due to the spread of English education. He was convinced that the British would definitely want to convert him to Christianity.
- Christian evangelists used to propagate their religion and condemn Hinduism texts. Indians were enraged by this.
- In 1857, a military law was passed, according to which soldiers could be sent across the sea to fight, but Hindu soldiers considered crossing the sea against their religion.
- In 1857, soldiers were given new cartridges to use. These cartridges had cow or pig fat on them. Hence the discontent among the Indian troops increased to the extent that they went on to revolt.
