Discuss the factors affecting Crystal field Stabilization energy in complex compounds?
Answers
The factors on which crystal field stabilization energy (CFSE) depends are:-
- The geometry of the complexes - The order in which the CFSE increases on the basis of the geometry of the complexes is as follows is: tetradedral < octahedral < square planner
- Nature of the lig-and - if the lig-and approaching is weak in nature then the energy gap is small due to less splitting of the d-orbital. When the lig-and is strong, the reverse action takes place
- Nature of the metal cation - in case of different charges on the cation is present for the same metal then the one with the higher charge polarizes the lig-and
- Quantum number - The gap energy is high if the quantum number of the central ion is high.
Crystal field stabilisation energy (CFSE) is influenced by the following factors:
The geometry of the complexes - The following is the order in which the CFSE grows based on the geometry of the complexes: square planner tetradedral octahedral tetradedral octahedral tetradedral octahedral te
The nature of the ligand approaching - if the ligand approaching is weak, the energy gap is tiny because the d-orbital splits less. When the ligand is strong, the activity is reversible.
The nature of the metal cation - if the same metal has many charges on the cation, the one with the higher charge polarises the light.
Quantum number - If the quantum number of the centre ion is large, the gap energy is large.
