The factors that were led to the weakening of the caste hierarchy in India are as follows.

(i) Due to the efforts of the social reformers and partly due to solo-economic changes, castes and caste system in modern India have undergone great changes.

(ii) Economic growth and large scale urbanization has also contributed to the weakening of the caste system.

(iii) Due to growth of literacy and education in India the casteism is now slowly disappearing from the society.

(iv) Occupational mobility has also made its contribution and with the weakening of the position of the landlords in the villages, the old notions of caste hierarchy are breaking down.

(v) The Constitution of India has prohibited any caste based discrimination and laid the foundations of policies to reverse the injustices of the caste system.
