Explanation:

The ratio between the number of women and men in the population is known as sex ratio.

Factors responsible for imbalances in the sex ratio: In countries where there are frequent cases of gender discrimination and the practice of female infanticide, female foeticide and domestic violence, the sex ratio is bound to be unfavourable. The sex ratio is favourable for females in 139 countries in the world and it is unfavourable for them in 72 countries. Continent wise, Asia has a low sex ratio as countries such as India, China, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Afghanistan have a lower sex ratio. A greater part of Europe, including Russia, has a lower number of males. This is due to the better status of women and migration of men to other parts of the world.

There are four main sectors where men and women are engaged in various activities. These are primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors.

The proportion of population engaged in the four sectors indicates the level of economic development of a country. In under developed and developing countries, usually more than 50% of the population is engaged in the primary sector, while majority of people in developed countries are engaged in secondary, tertiary and quaternary activities.
