Answer:

Napoleon was military genius who was happy only on the battlefield. He conducted many successful campaigns and he led an Empire for about 10 years even though he was coming from a little known family in Corsica. His soldiers revered him like a living god. All these elements are enough to make any man lose the reality of things and he felt he was invincible. Several of his advisers told him every time they could that he should seek peace. After Austerlitz, Talleyrand congratulated the Emperor but told him that he hoped it was the occasion to have peace and he did so on several occasions. Every time, Napoleon ignored him. Because of his ambition, Napoleon missed opportunities to consolidate a strong alliance with Austria which would have made a Russian military campaign unnecessary and when he decided to attack his Russian counterpart, he thought he would definitely win by crushing the armies of the Tsar. However, the Russians avoided almost all major encounter and wore down Napoleon's army. Napoleon attacked with 700 000 men and came back with about 30 000. After that, the myth of the invincible general was broken and the Russians pushed their advantage. The Prussians and the Austrians who were waiting for the occasion to wipe away the humiliations of the past 20 years leapt at the opportunity. Faced against them, Napoleon had an army of enthusiastic but inexperienced men and was unable to stop them. Furthermore, every time a region was conquered by the coalition, Napoleon was losing a supply of soldiers while the allies were gaining one. In the end, he was pushed back to Paris and had no choice to abdicate. All of this was the result of one thing: his ambition which made him lose the sense of reality. If he had been more moderate, he would probably have lasted longer.
