Discuss the factors which favours the formation of ionic bond?
Answers
Ionic bonding is a chemical bond between a positive ion and negative ion. Ionization energy, electronegativity, and lattice energy are the factors that influence the formation of ionic bonds of elements.
Certain major factors that influence the ionic bond formation are as follows
1) Lattice energy ⇒ It is the energy that is released when anion or cation are brought to their equilibrium site. The chances of ionic bond formation increase with increase in lattice energy.
2) Ionization energy ⇒ It is the energy needed to remove the loosely bound electron from the gaseous atom that is isolated in any element. Lesser is the ionization energy the easier to remove electron and form cation.
3) Electron affinity ⇒ It is just opposite to ionization energy, this is the energy that is released to add electron to an isolated atom of gas. Higher electron affinity allows higher energy release hence ease in anion formation.
