The 1990s have seen the proliferation of Dalit organisations in different states of our country. The case of BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) in Uttar Pradesh is most important. The rise of BSP has been the most striking feature of dalit identity and politics in India. It succeeded in making government in Uttar Pradesh. Mayavati has been the chief minister of the state thrice.
The BSP was founded by its President Mr. Kanshi Ram on April 14, 1984. Before forming the BSP, Kanshi Ram mobilized the dalits under the banner of two organisations i.e. All India Backward and Minority Employees Federation and Dalit Soshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti. The BSP aimed to mobilize the majority of Bahujan Samaj, consisting of the dalits, backward class, and religious minorities which excluded the high castes like Brahmins, Rajputs and Baniyas. The main motive of BSP was that Bahujan Samaj, backward classes and minorities should rule the country. With this perspective, BSP contested the Assembly and Parliamentary elections in several States in the country from 1985 onwards. The BSP made its presence felt in states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab etc.
