Medieval Drama had more of biblical stories and about the saints. The sole purpose of these dramas was to teach religion.  The plays during this period was divided into “Mystery Plays, Miracle Plays and Morality Plays”

Slowly, vernacular started taking hold of these dramas and they used Latin language to enact.  Slowly the drama started moving away from Church and their disapprobation was attached in these plays.  These plays also had amusement and included stories right from the creation of the world to the Judgement Day.

Answer:

At the start of Elizabeth's reign, there were two main forms of drama. Mystery drama consisted of plays that told Bible stories in English. ... The revival of classical knowledge, and especially Roman drama, led to the development of more realistic forms of drama, including comedies, tragedies, and history plays.
