The growth of the archives dates back to the year 1860. Since then the growth has been manifold.
- The Civil Auditor Sandeman emphasised in his report from 1860 the importance of decluttering the offices.
- This was to be done by destroying ordinary paperwork and moving all documents to a "Grand Central Archive," which is when the National Archives of India first emerged.
- However, when Professor G.W. Forrest was given the task of reviewing the documents kept by the Government of India, things started to take a more tangible form.
- In 1939, records were made available for legitimate inquiry for the first time, and by 1947, all documents were accessible.
- To investigate issues pertaining to conservation, a research lab was also formed.
- They moved to advancement after independence to take a more active and motivating position in the nation's repository field.
- The department reached its 125-year milestone in March 2015.
