Contribution of rivers towards economic development: 1. Rivers as source of drinking water 2. Rivers and crop irrigation 3. River and industries 4. Water transport 5. Soil redemption.

1. Rivers as source of drinking water:

Rivers have played a major role in civilization progress since ancient times. Ancient civilizations like the one at Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro grew up in Indus valley. Similarly the ancient Egyptian civilization grew along the river Nile.

In ancient India, industrial towns all existed near the river banks. This evidence highlights the role of rivers in civilization progress in all ages. Abundant supply of water is a prerequisite for a human settlement.

2. Rivers and crop irrigation:

Water is not only necessary for life but is also needed for most other occupations. In agriculture, irrigation plays an important role. The population density is maximum is regions where there is enough rainfall. On the contrary, dry regions have scantily populated villages. Cattle rearing also need abundant supply of water. In dry regions, the popular occupations are pastoral in nature.

ADVERTISEMENTS:

If we examine our legends we find that while Krishna belonged to the region near the river Yamuna, Ram belonged to Ayodhya near the river Saryu. Much of the agricultural prosperity of Punjab can be ascribed to the canal network that has been carved out in the land of five rivers.

3. River and industries:

Industries need power which is being generated at a large number of Hydro-electricity projects spread all over the country. Himachal Pradesh with surplus power has been attracting industrialists from different parts of the country.

Industries like the paper industry need large quantities of water which is available from rivers. Multi-purpose projects built of river have helped in controlling floods besides making water for irrigation available all parts of the year. Storage dams are also being used for fish culture. An unfortunate use to which our rivers are being put is disposal of untreated industrial waste.

4. Water transport:

The Rivers assume unusual importance where their course is navigable. Transport over the rivers through boats and steamers are economical since there is no expenditure involved on track maintenance. River transport was very popular when there were no railways and motor vehicles.
