Port cities were the most important centres of British trading activites. From Calcutta or Kolkata, Bombay and Madras, raw materials were sent to Britain. Similarly, British finished goods, including Lancashire cotton, entered India mainly through these ports. These ports also played a key role in further distribution of British goods to different parts in India.
