Answer:

The narrator was born in impoverished and dismal conditions where there was no record of either the exact place of birth or the date of birth. He lived in most miserable, desolate, and discouraging surroundings. The log cabin that was his home was a dilapidated room of about 14 x 16 sq ft with large cracks. This also served as the kitchen for the plantation. It had no glass windows or a door. They slept on naked earth with filthy rags. Hence, he suffered cold in winters and heat from the open fireplace in summers.

As a child, the narrator, cleaned yards, carried water to the men in the fields, or went to the mill to deliver the corn to be ground. If he got delayed, he got a severe scolding or even a flog.ging. His first garment was a flax shirt that felt like bristles on the tender skin and his first pair of shoes were wooden ones. The narrator longed for ginger cakes that he saw at the big house. His mother snatched a few moments for the children early morning or at night. He longed to go to school but never entered the schoolhouse door.
