Major components of population growth are :
(a) Birth rate, death rate and migration. Birth rate is a major component of growth because in India, birth rate has always been higher than the death rate.
(b) Due to improved health facilities, death rate has been declining in India. High birth rate and declining death rate in 1980 resulted in higher rate of population growth. Since 1981, birth rate has also started declining gradually, resulting in gradual decline in the rate of population growth.
(c) Migration is the third component of population growth. International migration changes the size of the population. Internal migration does not change the size of the population but influences the distribution of population within the nation. Migration changes the size of population of rural and urban areas.
