The idea of secularism manifests itself in the fact that it does not accord the status of ‘official religion’ to any of the religious faiths practiced in India. It provides all individuals and communities the freedom to profess, practice and propagate any religion, or not follow any religion at all. It also prohibits religious discrimination and provides safeguards against it. At the same time, the Indian Constitution also empowers the State to intervene in matters of religion so as to ensure equality within religious communities.
