The Merchant of Venice
William Shakespeare has used unique theme for his play ‘The merchant of Venice’. It basically depicts conflict between love and self-interest. It is a conflict between two hard core religious beliefs. It’s a conflict between friendship and love.
Prejudice becomes the core element of the play. Shylock and other Christian characters are adamant and do not want to divert from their own religious beliefs. Shylock while doing contract with Antonio is vehement towards Antonio’s religion and doesn’t actually wants money from him but wants to torture him.
Portia in disguise as a lawyer expects mercy from Shylock but forgets it is a breach of contract between Antonio and Shylock. Thus, while demanding mercy Portia is unknowingly standing for anti-Jewish or pro-Christian beliefs. She tries to save her lover’s friend with wit and intelligence.
Antonio truly stands for friendship when he helps his friend, Bassanio, to help him marry Portia by becoming a guarantor. He is also ready to cut his flesh as per the contract.
Thus this play is about two religions live in hatred for each other. Friends help each other in hard times. Lovers showing gratitude towards each other. Two merchants have different ideologies and both are deviating from humanity and love for each other.
