- There were low level of income.
- The economy at the time of independence was very bad.
- The handicraft industries were cotton and silk textile which gave special place in India.
- British government changed the whole structure and economic policies for the protection of the economic status of Britians rather than the India.
- The main reason for the slow growth of population was poverty, famines and poor health facilities.

The state of occupational structure on the eve of independence was as follows: (a) Pre-dominance of Agriculture Sector: The agriculture sector accounted for the largest share of work-force which was 72.7 per cent. The manufacturing and service sectors accounted for 10.1 per cent and 17.2 per cent respectively.
