In the first scene of Act I in Merchant of Venice, Antonio is seen in a melancholy mood and he himself was unaware of the reason that was the cause of his sadness.

His friends thought that he was worried because of his ships were out on the sea.

But Antonio disagreed with them and told that he could handle any tension about his ships.

A friend suggested that he might be in love, which he rejected as well.

According to him, he was sad because he did not feel happy.
