The situation of elderly is sad as well as worrisome.

  • Society is fast moving, where the elderly often feel neglected, unhelpful and even alone. The story portrait of a lady describes some situations -
  1. The city life is fast and always moving. Since old people have lived most of their life in village, they are unable to cope up with the lifestyle of the city. Same was the case with author's grandmother.
  2. While in village, she helped the grandson with his studies. However, in the city he started reading in English. Since she could not understand the language she was unable to help him any longer.
  3. She also felt lonely. In the village she daily used to accompany author to school, and wait for him in the nearby temple, whereas in the city the school was far and she could not be with him.
  4. The loving relationship between both got strained, which further increased her plight. She was left alone and used to feed sparrows to spend time. She was extremely ill and died one day due to poor health.
