Poverty Scenario of India
1. There is a substantial decline in poverty ratios in India from about 55 % in 1973 to 30% in 2009-10. The proportion of people below poverty line came down to about 26% in 2000.
2. Although the percentage of people living under poverty has declined in the earlier two decades ( 1973 - 1993 ), but the number of poor remained stable around 320 million for a fairly long period.
3. Orissa, Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh continue to be the most poorest states of India.
4. In comparison, there has been a significant decline in poverty in Kerala (human resource development), Punjab and Haryana (high agricultural growth rates), West Bengal (land reform measures), Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (distribution of food grains)

Povery Scenario of the World
1. Poverty declined substantially in China and South-east Asian countries as a result of rapid economic growth and massive investments in human resource development. Number of poors in China has come down to 85% in  1981 to 14% in 2008.
2. In the countries of South-Asia( India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan) the decline has not been as rapid.
3. In Sub-Saharan Africa, poverty in fact rose from 51% in 1981 to 47% in 2008.
4. In Latin America, the ratio of poverty remained the same.
5. Poverty has also resurfaced in some of the former-socialist countries like Russia, where officially it was non- existent earlier.
