Bleaching powder is prepared by the reaction of milk of lime with Chlorine. The chemical name for Bleaching powder is Calcium Oxychloride.

Properties:

1. It is a pale yellow powder. It has a strong smell of chlorine. It is soluble in water but a clear solution is never formed due to the presence of impurities.

2. On long standing, it undergoes auto-oxidation into calcium chlorate and calcium chloride.

3. On account of the formation of nascent oxygen, it shows oxidising and bleaching properties.

Uses:

1. As a disinfectant and germicide especially in the sterilization of drinking water.

2. For the manufacture of chloroform.

3. For making wool unshrinkable.

4. As an oxidising agent in the industry.
