Discuss the procedure to elect the prime minister of india?
Answers
To understand how the entire process of choosing the Prime Minister and President a few points are needed to be taken into per-requisite knowledge
Voters :- We, the voters of the country vote generally in two ways or rather should I say two different type of election being
State Assembly :- The state Assembly elections are those in which we choose our MLA's which further choose the CM of the state.
Lok Sabha Elections :- These elections are the ones in which we choose MPs (Member of Parliament ) .
Upper House (Rajya Sabha ):- The state assemblies select the member of Rajya Sabha from each state , the number varies depending upon the size and population of that particular state. The total number elected in this manner being 238 ( out of the total 250).
Lower House (Lok Sabha) :- As explained above , the voters directly cast votes to elect Members of Parliament from respective constituencies , the total number being 543.
Now, for electing the Prime Minister and President :-
Prime Minister :- The Prime Minsiter is elected by the elected members of Lok Sabha among themselves i.e. the Prime Minister needs to be the Member of Lok Sabha as well. If a candidate gets more than 50% support (272+ in this case) , he becomes the Prime Minister of the nation.
President :- The is selected by all the above mentioned institution i.e. by Members of Lok Sabha , Members of Rajya Sabha and Members of State Assembly. Unlike the PMs selection, each state have different representation in terms of population .
Every elected member of the legislative assembly of a State shall have as many votes as there are multiples of one thousand in the quotient obtained by dividing the population of the state by the total number of elected members of the Assembly.
For selection one needs to have more votes than other candidate unlike 50%+ required in PMs election.
