The Sun is the ultimate energy source for the entire universe. The energy of sun reaches earth through radiation and circulates through various processes such as conduction, convection, Advection, and terrestrial radiation ect.

Though sun is continuous radiating energy, The earth as a whole does not accumulate or loose heat. It maintains its temperature this is popularly know as heat budget or heat balance of the earth. This can happen only if the amount of heat received in the form of insulation is equals to the amount lost by the earth in the form of terrestrial radiation.

Of the 100% energy radiated by Sun, nearly 35% is reflected back even before reaching the earth's surface by clouds and ice covered areas of earth. The reflected amount of radiation is called albedo of earth. The remaining 65% units absorbed by atmosphere(14%) and earth's surface(51%). The energy absorbed by earth's surface radiates back in the form of terrestrial radiation into atmosphere and space directly. The energy absorbed by atmosphere(from sun as well as from earth) also radiates back into the space.

This is how earth neither warms up nor cools down despite the huge transfer of heat and maintains its heat balance. But now a days due to rapid industrialization and urbanization the increased emission of GHG's causing the raise in average temperature of earth. This problem needs to be addressed with effective measures to save our beloved planet earth.
