British entered India to do business and export spices and other things. However, they realized that the Indians did not have any unity and with the help of the divide and rule tactics, they successfully conquer the whole country. Slowly, they expanded their business activities and India was their base. After conquering many regions and states, the British had their eye on the East, mainly, Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.  With time, the  British managed to friends with the rulers.  In the year 1757, the British managed to win the Battle of Plassey and in 1765, they won the Battle of Buxar making them the ruler of most of Bengal. After that, the remaining princely states automatically went to the British to rule. In this way, the East India Company took control over all of Bengal making Calcutta (now Kolkata) the capital.
