Maximum area under rice is in Asia. Among the rice growing countries, India has the largest area (44.8 million hectares) followed by China and Indonesia. In respect of production, India ranks second with 131 million tonnes of paddy next to China (200 million tonnes of paddy).India stands second in the production of rice producing 155.682 Million Metric Tonnes per annum after China with highest production. Rice is the staple food for Indians and India's climate especially the Deccan plateau region is very much suitable for rice cultivation.

. Wheat is the main cereal crop in India. The total area under the crop is about 29.8 million hectares in the country. The production of wheat in the country has increased significantly from 75.81 million MT in 2006-07 to an all time record high of 94.88 million MT in 2011-12.
