Europeans had to pay money to the people of the region from where their trade goods were transported. This led to a very high prices of spice in Europe. So they desperately needed to find a new sea route to minimize this cost. Portuguese were the first to find a sea route to India.

Answer:
Indian goods had very high demand in European countries. In earlier times, these goods were transported by the middle east. After the conquering of Constantinople by the Ottoman Empire, this trade stopped. Since Indian Muslin, spices, etc. were in high demand in Europe, Europeans started looking for alternate routes to India. This was how Vasco Da Gama, a portugese explorer ended up on the shores of India.
